Montague Island

premier eco-tourism experience

Travel guru Catriona Rowntree recently described Montague Island as “a nightmare to film because every aspect is so good”. The island was voted Tourism Australia’s top eco-tourism destination in 2008 and is an important breeding ground for around 12,000 Little Penguins which can be seen coming ashore at dusk after feeding at sea.

unique wildlife

The island is home to the largest fur seal colony on the NSW coast and is a breeding ground for around 15 bird species - while dolphins, whales and endangered grey nurse sharks can all be seen at various times of year.

tours & overnight stays

The National Parks & Wildlife Service run tours of the island which cover its heritage-listed buildings, wildlife and history. First operated as a lighthouse site in the late 1800s, it’s now possible to stay overnight in the beautifully restored lighthouse-keeper’s cottage. Guests can assist in ongoing seabird research projects so their stay doubles up - according to Catriona - as a “romantic eco-adventure”.
